Welcome to SHAG's Arrowhead Gardens, an affordable senior living community in West Seattle - where active seniors have come to expect the unexpected!

About SHAG

The Senior Housing Assistance Group (known throughout the Pacific Northwest as SHAG) is a Washington non-profit organization formed in 1988 that has steadily grown to become the largest operator of affordable senior living communities in the Puget Sound region. SHAG is dedicated to providing quality, affordable rental apartment homes and promoting an active and fulfilling lifestyle for people age 61 or older or age 55 or older and disabled.

SHAG's mission is to:
  • PROVIDE quality rental accommodations for seniors in a safe and pleasant environment
  • EARN the respect of its residents and their families
  • RESPECT each resident's right to independence and self-respect
  • PROVIDE knowledgeable, competent and caring on-site resident management staff
  • FACILITATE a variety of social and recreational activities in a friendly and supportive environment
  • BE a responsible corporate citizen
SHAG partners with other non-profit sponsors and for-profit developers to develop, own and operate affordable rental retirement living communities for seniors. In addition, SHAG partners with other non-profit and for-profit agencies to facilitate social, health and human services to residents of its senior living communities.

SHAG currently operates affordable senior living communities in 28 locations in the Puget Sound region, from Bellingham to Olympia, including six locations in Seattle. Certain age and income restrictions apply to all our communities. SHAG's affordable senior living communities offer numerous unexpected amenities and features. However, SHAG does not offer common dining, housekeeping or assisted-living or healthcare services. Rather, SHAG coordinates with social service agencies and in-home care providers to help residents obtain these services and others.

Typical amenities in SHAG's newest, affordable senior living communities include a media center with large flat-screen HDTV and home theater sound system, a computer alcove with free internet access, and a fitness center with low-impact exercise equipment. Some communities have special amenities such as a rooftop mini-golf course and Pea-Patch planter boxes for outdoor recreation and enjoyment.

All apartments in SHAG's affordable senior living communities are offered only on a rental basis with a minimum lease term of at least six months. Optional lease terms of 12 months, 18 months and 24 months are also available. There are no entry fees to live in a SHAG community, although a modest, refundable security deposit is required. Monthly rents include all or most utilities (water, sewer and garbage). Telephone, cable TV and internet services are not included but are available on an optional basis. Most of SHAG's affordable senior living communities are non-smoking. Small pets are welcome at all of our senior living communities.

The Discovery Center

It's no secret that our country's economic issues have impacted nearly everyone. Senior citizens in particular have felt the pinch, with declines in home values and retirement savings along with the rising cost of rents, utilities, food and transportation.

In fall 2008, SHAG opened its Discovery Center at 3642–33rd Avenue South in South Seattle, just off Rainier Avenue South. SHAG established the Discovery Center to provide a central location where seniors can go to learn more about their affordable senior living options. The staff at the Discovery Center can also help seniors choose from the more than 4,200 apartments in SHAG's 28 affordable senior living communities to find the community that suits them best based on location, type of apartment unit, amenities and value. Some age and income restrictions apply, so if a senior is not eligible for one of SHAG's affordable senior living communities, we make every effort to help him or her find a suitable housing arrangement.

Call SHAG's Discovery Center where you can learn more about our 28 properties. SHAG provides this one-stop learning experience with details on floor plans, amenities, age and income qualifications, and rents at each of SHAG's 28 affordable senior living communities. Seniors and their families no longer need to face the daunting task of going from property to property, searching for the most suitable and affordable senior living community. The process has been streamlined and simplified at the Discovery Center to make the search much easier and more rewarding. Make up your mind, and then we'll help you make your move.

A New Type of SHAG Senior Living Community

While certain age and income restrictions apply to all of our communities, SHAG recently opened Victoria Park, a new type of affordable senior living community with more relaxed income restrictions. Victoria Park, located in the Lake City neighborhood of Northeast Seattle, was designed for seniors of all income levels. With a sleek, modern exterior, roof top gardens and upscale amenities like stylish black kitchen appliances. We like to think of it as affordable luxury!
